De-escalation and Personal Security
for Frontline Glam Sector Workers

This course is tailored for front-line staff in the gallery, library, archive, and museum (GLAM) sector who are not security professionals. It equips participants with essential knowledge and skills to recognise typical causes of conflict and effectively de-escalate challenging situations. The course design is based on extensive consultation with security experts, front-line staff and their managers in the GLAM sector.
Learners who complete this course will be able to:
- Recognise elements of a person’s culture and culturally unsafe behaviour.
- Identify concerning or escalating behaviour.
- Use effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques for de-escalation.
- Set behavioural boundaries and demonstrate empathy.
- Manage and respond to incidents involving children and young people.
To enrol, candidates must:
- Be an employee of the GLAM or security sector
- Be nominated by your employer
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand, or an Australian citizen or permanent resident residing in New Zealand
- Be able to speak and understand English
- Have basic computer skills to complete a online course
Admission may be granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Director of Stratcom Security.
