The New Zealand Certificate in Security (Foundation) (Level 3) is designed for individuals entering the security industry, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge to perform basic security services safely and effectively. The programme emphasises professional approaches in observation, communication, conflict management, customer service, and teamwork.

The NZQA unit standards required for obtaining the Certificate of Approval (CoA) are included in this certificate.

• • • If you have already hold a CoA: You have already completed the relevant unit standards included in the Level 3 certificate. Therefore, you won’t need to repeat those units, making your pathway to obtaining the Level 3 qualification shorter.
    • If you do not have a CoA: By completing this Level 3 certificate, you will fulfil the requirements to apply for the CoA alongside obtaining the level 3 certificate.

• • 1. Communicate effectively with security management and staff, clients, and the public, while carrying out security work.
    2. Conduct self professionally and ethically as a security guard in a workplace, demonstrating integrity and respect for all individuals.
    3. Operate security equipment and technology while carrying out security work.
    4. Apply knowledge of New Zealand legislation relevant to the security industry to promote a safe and secure environment, mitigate risks and respond to security breaches.
    5. Apply knowledge of confidentiality, corporate sensitivity, privacy and specific client requirements, to protect clients in a security context.
    6. Apply knowledge of personal safety, situational awareness and risk assessment as it relates to workplace health and safety in order to carry out security work, including working in isolation.
    7. Respond to incidents, events, and emergency situations, and interact with other organisations including emergency services in a security work context.

To enrol, candidates must:

• • • Be currently employed in a security role (holding a temporary or full Certificate of Approval).
    • Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand, or an Australian citizen or permanent resident residing in New Zealand.
    • Be proficient in English.
    • Preferably hold NCEA Level 1 or an equivalent academic qualification; however, admission may be granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Director of Stratcom Security.
